Enforcers of the Cosmic Law were dreaded everywhere they set foot. They crossed borders without permission, ignored planetary defenses, and dragged fugitives out of hiding no matter where they fled. Time, distance, and power meant nothing to them. Even champions bound to the Athelan Battlegrounds knew better than to cross an enforcer. When their ships descended, planets fell silent, and no one stood in their way.
Volta was one of their finest. On a routine mission, she had been tasked to retrieve a fugitive suspected of smuggling, murder and sedition against the Veyrathi. Her latest intel indicated he had gone into hiding with his own security detail in a frontier colony. She arrived without announcement and the people of the settlement, surprised and terrified, scattered away immediately. Doors sealed, guards left their post and those who lingered wouldn't even dare to look her in the visor. Volta tore through the colony one door at a time, demanding answers. Those who resisted found her hook buried in the wall beside their heads, lightning searing the warning. It didn’t take long before trembling hands gestured toward the building that sheltered her target.
Doors slammed open under Volta's forceful boot, until she inevitably found the right one. The guards surrounding the target froze, as if weighing survival against their sense of duty. She swept her visor across him and paused. A crest glimmered faintly across his chest; the mark of Veyros itself, reserved for Veyrathi blood exclusively. An untouchable.
A cocky smirk appeared on his face. "Walk away dog! You know full well there is nothing you can do."
The guards who knew better than to taunt an enforcer each quickly took a step back.
"The sentence is decided". Volta tightened her grip and fired. Her hook struck like a thunderbolt, coils of energy locking his body in spasms as he collapsed. She dragged his limp body out of the building and across the settlement in silence while the crowd stood still. The people more terrified of the enforcer than the man she was dragging so effortlessly.
The Veyrathi did not forgive the insult. Before her report could even be filed, Volta was seized, disarmed and brought before the council whose kin she had arrested. There were no considerations of her service, nor of the crimes of the man she had captured. They spoke only of disrespect, of order, and of her place beneath them. Her prisoner was released without trial.
For years Volta had carried their badge and executed their will without hesitation. To see her condemned as a traitor for enforcing the very laws she embodied was more than hypocrisy...it was betrayal. Execution would have silenced her too quickly. Instead, they chose a punishment that would stretch into eternity. Stripped of rank and identity, she was bound to the Athelan Battlegrounds, forced to fight forever as both spectacle and warning. But before they could finish the sentencing, she spat her only words in this "trial" to the council: “I have seen your transgressions. The Battlegrounds will not hide you from my judgment.”
